The Dance Journey Through Mexico

Hi my name is Addison and I’m from Joyce Kilmer Elementary school. The performance I attended was the Mexican Folkloric dance performance. The performance was at the Irving B. Harris Theater. The performers were musicians and dancers. What it is in the performance were all people from almost all ages dancing. Each dance they did had different music and different costumes for each part of Mexico.

The Visuals in the performance

What I saw in the performance was, their costumes were more on the cultural side for each part of Mexico, but those costumes were very delightful and unique because all of them were different. The lighting was amusing as well matched with all the different colors for their costumes. The lighting was just classical colors: blue, red, yellow are the colors that I saw. The performance was in an auditorium at the theater. Their movement was nice and very smooth in their dances. They really did well in dancing. I also think
that they were tap dancing. The staging was not too chaotic or very out there, it was basic and casual which I liked.

The Sounds

The sound/music was very enjoyable, interesting. They all were different, some were calm, some were sounding very adventurous/loud. There was also a band in the background behind the performers, they were amazing as well because they were ready for each dance and they all had different music so it was precise how they were ready for all that.

Most Effective / Least Effective

What I thought was the most effective and strong part in this performance is that the performers were very entertaining in dancing. They danced very well and smoothly. No one messed up or anything went wrong, it was super well done and well choreographed.
The least effective was nothing honestly but I do wish they added more in the background, it was a classical background which I did like but they could have also added things that matched with each other’s culture or what each culture had in common.

Overall message about the performance

The things I’d remember about the performance is how different these dances are from where I’m from and their costumes as well and in music. This performance made me feel very calm. I don’t know why but It was good to feel calm and relaxed. The music was very pleasant, since I’m mostly stressed. This really helped me. I think the overall message of the performance was to show how different these cultures are and how special they are as well, like costumes and dancing. This was a great performance. I really enjoyed it and it was very enthralling, I really hope to see another performance soon! You can watch this performance on May 10th or in June, on the (Logan Center for the Arts School Matinee website).

The lively Latinx performance!

About the performance

I am here to inform you of the performance by the Mexican Folkloric company at the Logan Center for the Arts School Matinee in Chicago during April of 2021. In this performance I finished knowing so much more about Hispanic culture than I did before starting. I was introduced to Tijuana, Jalisco, La Pueblo, Yucatán, Veracruz, Michoacán, and Campeche dances and traditions. They also mentioned Native culture was mixed in and some African culture. I love how inclusive they were and showing all the other backgrounds mixed into the Hispanic culture. The ethnic expanse was very memorable in this performance!

Respect for the Culture!

I noticed they were very respectful towards those dancing in the performance. They made sure not to change the design if it was specific so that you keep respect towards the culture. The different colored and styled clothing had to stay the exact same. I know there was a lot of green, red and white. There were so many different designs in the clothing. I know that it can be hard to find the exact design, so I love that they tried their very best to keep it similar and value the dancer’s opinions! This also keeps the performers comfortable while dancing!

Movement and Interaction

The crowd interaction was amazing. The crowd would cheer them on and show support for the show! You’d see the dancers smile from the crowd reaction. All of the dancers were in sync, had expression, and had great energy. The choreography matched the mood! This was continuously shown throughout the performance. If the music were to be silent and I could only see dancing I’d know exactly what mood the music was. This is how well everything worked together! The men were respectful towards the women when dancing together. I also noticed whenever someone would leave or enter the stage everyone dancing would make room in a smooth way for those to join in or head out. You can see it was well put together to be the easiest movement that makes sense!

The extra’s of the performance

The lightning was spot on and fit so nicely, the dimness came in at the right times. The signs were on stage with pictures and that artwork was gorgeous. The performance had extras brought to stage to complete the performance. Those small changes are the things that make a huge difference. Ribbon was also brought onto stage as an extra. Everyone held it and worked together so it stayed in place. I heard guitar, violin, foot taps, symbols, and drums. Also when needed those watching got a check-in of information on the performance or where a dance originates from. Towards the end they bowed to show respect and gave information on where to see more and find them.

My view on the performance

Overall this performance was amazing! I give this a 5 star review hands down, and highly recommend this! You will leave knowing so much more than you knew starting, just like me! It’s a very fun performance that just doesn’t get boring! Everything about this was spot on and I have no complaints whatsoever. I hope you go and check out this wonderful performance and enjoy it as much as I do! Have a great day, bye!

Alberto M.

Critics introduction on performance

Hello, my name is Alberto M. and I am one of the critics that attended the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago. I would like to say that this performance took place at the Logan Center for the Arts School Matinee in Chicago and was scheduled on May 10 of 2021. Also there were many performers who’ve performed there from all over the world and many of the performers were modeled from Mexican, Asian, Carribean, Spanish, and African. This performance symbolized many of the dances from their country and the dances were based on the story from their past and many of them were during the War of Independence.

Critic Talks About The Performance

From looking at the performances that were performed during the session a lot had put heart, passion, time, focus, and regionality to them. For example, “El Gusto” was based on men and women. The men were mostly wearing brown as a representation of the symbol on the Mexican flag which was the eagle in the middle of it. While the women wore many different colors of dresses some wore blue, yellow, green, and orange dresses.  Their movement was very original and traditional, using their legs, arms, hands, and head. But the music, awww it was so splendid and beautiful, the rhythm was enthusiastic, and everything was just spot on.

Famous Critic Talks About His Connections and Life

While listening to the performance I thought about my past when I used to live in Mexico and some of the music from “La China Mexicana, Calabaceadons, Mexican Hat Dance, and Son De La Negra”. I remember walking down the streets and they would play that type of music. Where I lived they would play it in Bars, restaurants, and like in little stands where you would grab fruit or vegetables. Also, I remember the colorful dresses that they used in the dance called “El Gusto”. In most scenarios where they would use those dresses were in sometimes birthday parties. But most of the time it would be in adult parties or in quinceaneras which means “Sweet fifteens’ ‘ and also I remember the way they did the same traditional moves reminded me so much about the parties and quinces.

Critic’s Final Thoughts and Conclusion About the Performance

Overall when you think about the effort, this performance really had a lot of heart and it made me feel very welcomed and respected the way it is in Mexico but most importantly it made me feel back at home where I used to live and it just brings back good memories/stories. I also thought they had it all in hand, like straight into the bag where they put a lot of creativity on how they planned it was just a heart-hitting, like a home run for them. But in this case what I think about this performance is a very big successful dance by the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago. This was nothing more splendid to watch other than going back to my past and just remembering those days when I lived there.

Catch People’s Eye

In this awesome amazing  it features Mexican Folkloric Dances. These Mexican Folkloric dances are traditional dances from Mexican culture .The people who are responsible for making the performance  are Emily Hooper Lansana, José Ovalle, Dominy Poy, Henry Roa, and Juan Díes. The performance was about mexican folkloric dance and it was on May 10, 2021.

The liking i had for the music

I really liked the music because it sounds new to me and I like trying new things.I liked the dancing because it looked unique. I also liked how much energy there was in the play. And I like how a bunch of people from different ages participated. This is one of the best performances I have ever seen.

A good performance

Everyone did a good job. Their dancing skill were good Iike did a dance I never seen before And I don’t
I think anybody could have done it better. If I had a chance I would rewatch this performance again. I recommend this play to everyone.

Edwardo C.

I just watched a play about Mexican Folkloric Dance from the Logan Center. It showed us all of the different dances that Mexico has and their culture.

  1. When I was watching the Mexican Folkloric Dance from the Logan Center, I saw a lot of different cultural dances. Some of the dances were from cities or towns or from regular dancing. The clothing was special and the reason behind that is because, They used the same material that the original clothing had. For example if the clothing was made out of cloth back then it had to be made out of cloth. They said that they wanted to respect the culture and the dances.

The liking of the music

2. I really liked the music because sometimes my mom plays music like that. I liked the dancing as well and there was one dance that was called the maypole dance and there was a lot going on during the dance. People were grabbing the ribbon of the pole and they were dancing and grabbing the ribbon. And there were a bunch of more cool dances. I also liked how much energy they were putting into the play. Everyone participated, kids, teens, and adults as well.

The successful Dance

Everyone was successful in my opinion. And what I mean by that is that they must have taken a lot of dance classes or took many retakes to do the dances. Everyone played their part, no one did more than the other. And they took their time when t/hey had to move so that was smart because they could bump into each other and could’ve knocked down everyone. Well after all of that I was happy because of the music and I’m not going to lie I was kinda dancing to the music as well. I hope when you also see the play you have the same emotion as I did.

A Dance Through Mexico

Hello, my name is Kaffy A. and I am doing my blog review on the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company. Jose Ovalle, the artistic director and designer of the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company (MFDC), and three other dance instructors, all take part in making the MFDC informative and memorable, they used traditional and modern dances and outfits to make performances lively. The performances took place in Logan Center for the Arts School Matinee in Chicago, Harris Theater, on May 10, 2021. I saw and learned many things just from watching the performances, for example, how Mexico has 65 other languages apart from Spanish, or how different regions of Mexico have different and unique outfits and dances, like the Maypole Dance that was based on the region of Yucatan, where they danced with a ribbon and the males wore white hats while the females wore flower crowns. In the performance, I saw multiple age groups which made it enjoyable. Overall the performances were very informative and entertaining.

The Dance of Mexico’s Culture, History, and Art

The purpose of the performances was to distribute information about Mexico’s culture, arts, and history through dance and costumes. We see this in the La China Mexicana Dance, where the female’s costumes reflect a strong Spanish influence while the males wore a Chinaco outfit of the early to mid-1800s which was the costume that men wore during the war of independence from Spain in 1810. In the performance, I saw and heard many things from hearing tap dancing to seeing big colorful feather head crests. I saw some of the clothes and dances that revealed the historical periods of Mexico, for example, the 1910 Mexican Revolution. I also saw many colorful outfits, flower crowns, and sombreros. I saw that the males mostly wore brown or white, and I heard many instruments: the guitar, drum, violin, trumpet, and flute. I think the main topic of the dance was to show the values and arts of Mexico being expressed through dances, music, and outfits. The performances were very entertaining and lively. While the clothes, dances, and music were very effective, I think the dance was the most effective, the dances were special and from different regions of Mexico which made it interesting.

A Mexican Folkloric Dance

Overall the performances were very creative. The performances had many tap dances and intricate movements and designs. Many dances were modeled from Mexico, Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa. There were many instruments that I saw, for example, drums, violins, and guitars. They also used a variety of colors like red, blue, green, pink, and white for the costumes. I think the overall message was to distribute the history of Mexico through dance and show how history had shaped the arts, culture, and values of Mexico as well as how diverse it is.

Mexican Folklore

Introduction:

Jose Ovalle created “Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago” which has many cultural dances. I watched it online at the Logan Center Community Arts School Matinee Series, May 2021. Jose Ovalle put on an amazing performance. There was so much movement making it lively, they played cultural music, they also wore cultural suits/dresses, all these things combined with one another. These performances were fascinating to watch.

Details from the performance:

There was music, movement, and costumes. Some musicians were playing the violins, the drums, and others the guitar. The dancers were tap dancing which I found incredible. The girls used their dresses when they were dancing. They also had fans to fan themselves. I also saw a lot of partner dancing which was cool because the girls waved their dresses around the men.

My likings:

Something I really liked about the performance was how their movements went along with the music. Something that stood out to me was their traditional clothing. Their facial expressions showed that they were having fun, it also showed that they weren’t bored, they had a lot of energy. The dancers seemed like they were having a lot of fun dancing with the traditional clothing they were given.

Interesting things about the performance:

The culture influenced the dances and the clothing. Jose Ovalle didn’t want to change the way the culture dressed. The dancing, music, traditional clothing all combined with one another even the tap dancing. The fact that they didn’t change the way they culture dressed gave me a hint of what they were.

Conclusion:

Overall I liked the performance. The way the culture influenced the dancing, clothing, and music was an incredible idea. The partner dancing, and the tap dancing really helped the music in a lot of different ways, for example it made it more energetic. I really recommend this performance because not only are they dancing, they are giving you a sense of the culture.

Introduction

The Artistic Director Jose Ovalle presented to us some performances that were performed by the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago. It was absolutely amazing! It was full of culture, colors, sound, music, and dances. This performance took place on May 5, 2021. I watched the performance online in my virtual class. But the performance took place in Logan Center for the Arts School Matinees in Chicago. The music was very wonderful and amazing! The dances also made me want to dance! The clothing was colorful and bright. The background was dark and black. The movements were full of skill. The music was full of beautiful sounds. The dances were just lovely! This is just one of the many cultural performances that are out there. I really enjoyed watching this performance. I really recommend this performance to you.

Cultural Performance

As I said before this performance is full of culture. The clothing was amazing! The clothing was so bright and colorful. The clothing also looks comfortable but tight. The hats and masks were very cultural too. The music was also cultural, you could hear the drums, the guitars, and other instruments.

Favorites

One of my favorite dances was the one where there was sort of a dance-off between the ladies and the men. There is also one where the ladies were dancing but they were dancing with their dresses. There are more interesting and amazing dances but these two are my personal favorites. The movement flowed with the music. With every move, the performances became more amazing! It’s so shocking to see these dances.

Upgrades

Some things that could have been better were the lighting. Also, the background could have been more colorful instead of just dark and black. The music was great but could have been louder and stronger.

The Feeling

While watching this awesome performance, I felt like I was in Mexico, even though I’ve never been there before. I felt at home. I felt the welcoming atmosphere during this performance. This was a unique feeling. I have a connection with this performance. Some of the dancers were wearing clothing that I have used before. My mother had bought me a lovely dress. It had a cultural Mexican vibe, and my skirt was lavender. This performance reminded me of a  book I read with my class when I was in 2nd grade. It was called “Cinco de Mayo” which means May the 5th in English. This book was about a class learning a cultural Mexican dance for the school performance. My last connection is that my dad showed me some videos from his phone when he was little about my age, and he was dancing with all his ex-classmates.

Conclusion

The overall message that I think the performance gives is that there are many cultural dances and a lot of culture out around the world. I recommend this performance. It was amazing! I will always remember the dances, the colors, the movement, the music, and the culture.

Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago

Introduction

In the performance “A Dance Journey Through Mexico”, by The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago, Narrated by Jose Ovella, we get a look through Mexican culture with dance. Take a look at the different costumes and music in this performance. My name Marcus and I will be sharing my thoughts on this performance with you.

Music and Choreography

The performance starts with people dancing to music in really beautiful costumes. The costumes differ between different sections of the dance. The music of this performance is well written and gives off many emotions and feelings to the play. With the costumes and the music together, the dances look so beautiful. The dancers also know when to stop and start and what to do perfectly.

My Personal Experiences

This performance reminds me of my time in Mexico. It shows the culture and the emotion in music. It reminds me of all the dances I used to see at parties and just outside, in Mexico. I also enjoyed how the music made me feel at a party and everyone is so excited to be there.

Costumes and Props

I would also like to talk about the costume and props. The costumes were all uniquely different and they were very nice. The props they used also really added some spice into this performance and didn’t make it feel dry. I loved in the beginning when the kids used a prop flower because it looked so cool and beautiful. I think they should’ve added more props in the sections.

Conclusion

Overall, this performance is really good. I enjoyed the music and choreography and how they mixed well together. I do wish that the section of dances were a little bit longer and not short with many different dances. I also really enjoyed the different types of dances. They all were unique in their own way, whether be music or clothing. I would also wish that they would use props more often so I would definitely recommend this performance to anyone who enjoys dance and music as much as I do.

Mexican Folkloric Dance Review

The Mexican Folkloric Dance video that I saw was great. There was so much art, music, dance, fashion, and more! There were multiple instruments used in the performance. The performers were very professional and well-dressed. Their amazingly berserk outfits matched the vibe and music! Their mood and facial expressions match too! Everything just connects. Their clothing was bright, really patterned and fuzzy. The men wore huge hats and suits. The women wore elegant and fancy dresses with a fan. The clothes that they wore were very bright and vivid. Very eye-catching. Both wore tap shoes to go with the music. I have definitely seen this on social media and in real life too!

There were many, many instruments used in the performance.. The instruments I think I heard are:

guitarron, guitar, drums, violin, high hat cymbal, xylophone, trumpet, accordion, and flute. When I heard the instruments it made me very energized and happy! I love their taste of music.

My favorite dance was when the men and women gathered around multiple ropes. They swung themselves around on the ropes, dancing. They were holding the rope and going in a squiggly motion. This dance left me stunned. It was just so unique and fascinating. I love this because it was just so creative and I have never ever seen this dance style!

Conclusion:

The performance was stunning, remarkable, and incredible! But, there was a small issue. I heard people cheering and clapping in the background so I couldn’t really hear what the instruments sounded like. It isn’t a big issue, but I just wanted to address that.

 Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Modupe Obisesan Mo for short, and today I will be talking about a performance I watched titled ”Mexican Folkloric Dance” by the Logan Center for the Arts.
My rating for this performance is a 5-star. The topic of this performance was the China Mexicana from the state of Puebla and the history between them. The China Mexican music comes from the state of Jalisco. Flamenco dance mixed with Cuban guajira and was blended by local musicians to create the style. Watching this performance made me feel excited to learn more.

About “Mexican Folkloric Dance”

The historical periods revealed in the dances include pre-Columbian indigenous times, the Spanish Colonial Period, the Struggle for Independence, and the 1910 Mexican Revolution. The Mexican Folk Dance reflects on the history and cultural attitudes of the Mexican people.

The totality of the Mexican’s history and culture created the basis upon which the Mexican Mestizo Folk Dance. ”Folkloric dance”, is a term for traditional Mexican dances that feature local folk culture with ballet characteristics – pointed toes, exaggerated movements, and highly choreographed. Mexicans while doing this knew that there is an injury risk.

The historical periods revealed in the dances include pre-Columbian indigenous times, the Spanish Colonial Period, the Struggle for Independence, and the 1910 Mexican Revolution. The Mexican Folk Dance reflects on the history and cultural attitudes of the Mexican people. Through this medium, they express their inner-self.

Music and Costumes

This performance reminded me of “Mummies in the Americas.” I noticed that Peru, Chile, and Mexico have colorful outfits. The woman in Mexican Folkloric wear is a ranchero design dress, this also reminded me of Indian dresses with bright colored ribbons. All of their costumes showed their culture. The most effective part of the performance was their expressions and movement. A story that reminded me of this play was ”Those Who Inspire Mexico – 107 stories of inspiration for the Mexican youth” and ”Real Stories/Real People In Mexico.’’ The creativity of this performance was completely amazing!! I love learning about different cultures and this performance truly taught me a lot.

Conclusion

Overall, the features that contributed to the performance were successful. Except the lighting and the camera’s location while filming could have been more useful. My last thought about the performance was “How did they deliver all of the costumes when covid was going on?” MFDC already answered my question, my final feeling for the dance was amazed. Everything was scripted well, the dancing was amazing, the narrator did a good job at explaining, and the setting was well done.

INTRO

This blog is about the Mexican Folkloric Dance. The dance is all about moving to the music of Mexican culture. The music, dance, clothes, and movements are *chefs kiss*. The performance was very creative. This performance by Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago is at the Logan Community Center, and it was on May 10, 2021.

ART

The performance was very creative. It was based on a subject and the clothes matched it. The clothes were very colorful. They were different for the men and women too. The outfits were designed with patterns, flowers, sequins, glitters, feathers, etc. The music was very catchy, upbeat, and happy. The dance was very smooth and hype. They used tap dancing to give the performance a bit of spice.

MEMORIES

The performance reminded me of a performance my family used to go to. It was not Mexican Dance but it was similar. The clothes were also colorful, the music was upbeat, and the dance was similar because they used tap dancing as well.

IMPROVEMENT

Something that they could’ve done differently to make it better was adding more different emotions because in the performance I saw happiness and sadness but if there was more it could be even better. They did the choreography perfectly to match the music and clothes.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I think this performance was fantastic, amazing, and joyful. The music was 10/10 and the dance was the perfect match. I totally recommend this performance for its way of showing Mexican culture’s beauty from its dance and music traditions.

Mexican Dance

Introduction:

Mexican dance is amazing. They dance with lots of joy and they are happy to dance for their audience. You can watch them at the Logan center community. This performance was down on Monday, June 7, 2021.  The performance group was called the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago.  Mexican costumes are beautiful. Dresses are designed with flowers on them and have different colors, the colors were pink, black, yellow, red, and almost green. For the boys, costumes are like “cowboy” costumes or they wear white pants and a shirt or brown pants and a shirt. The people are performing the dance with a partner together and having lots of fun. That’s what I liked.

1st Body Paragraph:

At the beginning of the performance, Emily Hooper Lansana talked about how wonderful the people who are performing and how hard work they did to do the performance. After that, she wanted to share about the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago dance. And then the lovely performance started.

2nd/3rd Body Paragraph(s):

The performance started with a dance called Matachines from the region of Northern Mexico. That dance was good/funny because I loved the fur that was on their heads and I loved the dresses that they were wearing, the colors were pink, black, yellow, red, and almost green. so beautiful. I think that they make sounds with their feet or their boots that was so good to do.

There was a dance that I really liked and it’s called Calabaceados from the region of Tijuana. That was the best because the costumes that they are wearing just look like a cowboy outfit and they were so beautiful. There were two partners a man, and a woman. The outfit was amazing for the woman because the dresses were long and cute with the designs on them like the flowers. I loved it so much.

Conclusion:

That performance was the best. I loved the hard work they have done and I am sure that the audience loved it too. The performers should be proud of themselves for what they have done. For my readers, I think you should watch this performance because it will make you feel better if you are sad and it will make you want to dance with them. That performance was the best.

Mexcian Dancing

Introduction

This performance was about Mexican dancing. Mexican people were dancing and dressing up in costumes that they always wear to dance. The event took place in Chicago. This event happened in May 2021.

What is Mexcian dancing?

In the performance the movement was different. Some shows they danced to a fast song and some shows they danced slowly and classic. I saw in the show that there was a group of dancers having a big circle and in the circle they were drawing something. The movement of this show was different from all the movements they were dancing in the other shows.

Mexcian costumes

The girls in the dancing were wearing very long and colorful dresses. The men were wearing different costumes. They were also wearing colorful costumes.

Something inspired me

The thing that inspired me is that their dancing is similar to my country’s dancing. This made me feel happy because my country’s dancing is in other countries. I liked how all of them were wearing different colorful costumes. The thing that interested me is that the costumes were different from my country.

I noticed

I think the performance was successful because I like listening to music and learning about different dances with  different countries. I like how their movement was and how they were being intentional about it and making it the correct way. The dancing made me feel happy and excited and like I want to stand up and dance.
